Church InteriorWelcome!

Saint Basil the Great Orthodox Church is a community of the Orthodox Church in America— Diocese of the South. We are a local congregation of the Eastern Orthodox Communion of Churches (among which are numbered the Russian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, Romanian Orthodox and other nationally associated bodies).  Established in 2007 by a small group of Orthodox Christians in Wilmington who were committed to expanding the Orthodox witness to the Christian faith in Southeastern North Carolina through an English language Orthodox Church, St. Basil’s wishes to offer the riches of traditional Christianity to all who desire a deeply reverent worship experience informed by traditional Christian doctrines and values.

Our priest, Father Peter Robichau, can be contacted by calling 910-805-0981, or you may email him at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Visitors are always welcome.  Come and see!

  • SAINT BASIL'S IS MOVING ON FEB 28, 2010!

    MAP TO NEW LOCATION

Our community finally signed a lease on a space of its own, and rennovations are now complete.  By God's grace, we will celebrate our first Divine Liturgy in this new facility at 9:00 on February 28, 2010.  The 2600 square foot facility off of Wrightsville Avenue in Wilmington will provide adequate worship space as well as plenty of fellowship, meeting and office space.  Volunteer workers have labored to create a beautiful facility that we can call our own until such a time that a full-scale land acquisition and building project can be undertaken (when God wills).

On February 28, in lieu of 3rd and 6th hours, which normally preceed Divine Liturgy, we will serve the Lesser Blessing of the Waters at 8:30am in the nave of the Church on Kent Street, followed by a blessing of the new premesis.  The Divine Liturgy for the Second Sunday of Great Lent (Gregory Palamas) will begin immediately after the blessing of the Church.  Please come join us!

The address of the new building is:
    2166 Kent Street
    Wilmington, NC 28403

************************************
After several years in the Port City of North Carolina, Saint Basil the Great Orthodox Church finds itself moving into a new phase of existence.  What started out as a few families interested in instablishing an English language mission of the Orthodox Church in America in Southeast North Carolina (meeting in borrowed space) has now congealed into a stable community of families and individuals with a building of its own.

In addition to the acquisition of new physical facilities, St. Basil's plans to welcome our interim priest, Fr. Peter Robichau, as its first, resident priest in June of 2010.  Until May of 2009, the parish had been served twice monthly by visiting priests from Jacksonville, Florida, Greenville, SC and Rock Hill, SC.  In the Summer of 2009, Fr. Peter Robichau and his family temporarily relocated to Wilmington and served St. Basil's full time for three months.  During this time, St. Basil's transitioned to regular, Sunday services, developed various outreach programs and laid plans for the future of the parish. Since September of 2009, Fr. Peter has been working with St. Basil the Great's leadership team (from his residence in New York) to prepare for the next, exciting phase of the parish's existence.

PostHeaderIcon Liturgical Items Wish List ...

***************************
As a young mission, St. Basil the Great Orthodox Church is beginning its existence with very few of the items that are required in order to participate fully in the liturgical life of the Church.  Our worship is, as the scriptures say "In spirit and in truth," and we find comfort in the fact that the Lord hears our prayers wherever we are and whatever our circumstances.  However, it is our goal to accumulate (in time) those items that lend to a beautiful and well ordered worship service in the Orthodox Tradition.

If you are able to assist us in the process of acquiring any of the items that we require (either by making a monetary donation, or supplying us with gently used items from another parish), your generosity will be greatly appreciated.  Please email Fr. Peter at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , or call him at 910-805-0981.

Pews v. Standing

A thoughtful article on
why many Orthodox
parishes, including our
own, do not have pews
in the center of the
worship space (though
we do have plenty of
seating).

Pews vs. standing: an
Orthodox controversy

My family came
into Orthodoxy
in a parish without
pews. St. Seraphim's
Catheral in Dallas,
observes the
traditional Orthodox
custom of parishioners
standing for the
entire two-hour
liturgy, though
there are chairs
lining the sides of
the worship space
for those who
cannot or who don't
wish to stand for
the service.
